Fort Yates
The things that nearly escape unmentioned these days… When Loren and Zaidee came out for the boys third birthday, we had the usual to-do list lined up to keep Loren busy. He continues to resist my plans for digging out a basement, but he jumped into refurbishing the fort readily enough. The fort was a gift from our next door neighbors, who, with teenage children somehow seem uninterested in a swingset and slide. Kids these days… Parts of the base had rotted away, from years of immersion in wood chips, and the upper surface was pretty damaged. And perhaps we’re spoiled by the absurd over-protectiveness of more current playset designs, but we wanted it to be a little less likely to inspire an emergency room visit. So we got to work.
I’d put a basic floor under it last fall, and we extended it with two platforms off to the side, to make it easier to reach the top. Nic and Dex were happy to lend a hand, and brought out their own tools.

They learned well from their Grandpa, and spent most of the time hanging out on the deck, eating lunch, and supervising.

At least Grandma Zaidee got some time to hang with the boys.
‘
And as soon as we were done with platforms, and attached the old climbing wall and slide, the boys proceeded to ignore the platforms altogether and scrambled up the climbing wall.

And down the slide!

Loren “hopped” up to make sure it was structurally sound.

Well, I know how I’m going to get down, Grandpa, but what are you going to do?

Now THIS is how you go down a slide!

Oh, and Dex kept looking right at his feet and stumbling when he hit the bottom, so we kept yelling at him to “Look Up, Dex!” And this was his response. If he were a few years older I’d swear he was doing it on purpose. As it is, I dunno…

And then, well, I’m not sure how to describe this one. His butt is definitely wider than the slide. The boys were happy to point this out. Repeatedly. ”Grandpa, butt too big!” Yes, we checked afterward to make sure the slide was still sound. It *is* a bit warped, but it still works. I’m not so sure about Loren. I know he didn’t try again. And yes, Laura, that’s your sweatshirt.
The last month they’ve spent up on the fort regularly, carrying cars up to the top and making them fly down the slide, or watching other kids out on the sport’s court, or God only know’s what. I’m still trying to figure out how to attach a new canopy, and where to put the steering wheel, and how to attach the swing set without erecting the huge A-frame support, but those are problems for another weekend.
