Happy 3rd Homecoming, Nicholas!
Today, three years ago, Nicky came home to us. Today, we celebrated his homecoming by going to the Evergreen State Fair. It was a first for the all the boys – Nicholas, Dexter and Joel. So, the first thing we did was to pay $20 for a memory – $7 to ride the pony and $13 for the accompanying picture. OK – he looks totally cute on his pony, Max, and Nic rode that pony like a cowboy.
Dexter wanted Nicky to have his moment and thus sat on the sidelines, watching his brother ride his first pony. Then it was off to see the sheep (or lambs if you’re Dexter – last night Joel was reading the boys a book and asked them to count the sheep to which Dexter responded “Actually Daddy, those are lambs.” On our way to the fair, we saw sheep, but Joel said, “actually Dexter, those are lambs”, to which Dex responded, “Actually Daddy, those are elephants” – you can’t win). We then sprinted through the food booths in order to see the Alaskan Pig Races. Four porkers running for fame and glory. There was quite the crowd there to cheer them on. Joel and I had to remind ourselves that the Fair comes to town every year, so it was ok if we missed something we wanted to see that Nicholas didn’t. We tried to rush them to the lumberjack show, telling them we had to go get food and get to the show, so we didn’t have time to go through the Cow pavilion, but Nicholas put his foot down (several times, actually, and his fists), and after a moment we came to our senses and gave in. After-all, it was his day today and Nicky wanted to see the animals. Then it was back to the animals – the rabbits, the dogs, the cows, followed by lunch and two little boys crashing fast.
Their very first dog show! I think they like the petting zoo more, though. We were happy they lasted until 12:45pm seeing that they had been falling asleep lately between 11am & noon.
It’s been a good day. The boys have been happy half of the time and cranky the other half. I think we’ve officially entered the 3′s. Potty training has all but failed. More stories about that at a later date. Oh, and one of the reasons why we haven’t been getting posts up is that Joel’s hand is in a brace and thus typing is, well, awkward and painful, to put it mildly. I never get to the computer and with our 45 free minutes a night, Joel and I have been vegging in front of the TV watching old Farscape episodes. We are almost through the whole series and thus will have free time again to get you all back up to date with our adventures.
In the meantime, we’re off to Michigan in a couple of days for our second grand Michigan adventure. We’re much more relaxed about it this year. We haven’t started packing yet, and we leave Thursday morning. Joel hasn’t even bought a suitcase full of toys to distract them. Presumably we’ll have quite a stash of photos from that trip to share soon.
Nic doesn’t quite understand what we mean by “homecoming day”, of course, but he certainly got into the spirit of getting his way ‘cuz it’s his day. And he kept telling Dexter, “on your homecoming day we can ride a train, after Michigan.” Happy Homecoming, Nic. We’re very, very glad you’re here with us.
