Born to have boys
For all of you who really know me, you know that my father and brother trained me well to have boys. I’m well schooled in the art of potty humor. That said, let me share with you a story the very thought of which made Joel cringe.
I was home alone with the boys this morning. Breakfast had been consumed. Mickey Mouse had been watched and the boys had commenced the whining portion of their day. We had recently given up (temporarily) on potty training because it had evoked screams of “NO!!!!!!!!!!” and thus, we thought it would be wise not to push for a while. Well, I needed to come up with a distraction because the whining and fighting was getting a bit out of hand. So, you ask, what did I do? I told the boys that I had to poop and did they want to see it when I was done? (This is where Joel cringed because he would never think of sharing his poop with anyone.) (not quite true – it’s just that I was taught that ladies never poop)
Well, it worked. Dexter and Nicholas’s eyes lit up and they ran into the bathroom with me. I sat down, Dexter lost interest and walked away. At least I didn’t get the “where Mommy penis?” question from him this time. Nicholas stayed for the show so playing along I grunted for him. He grunted along with me and told me “You can do it, Mommy. Push it out. Wait, let me get you a book.” and ran out of the room. He was back in a flash with the “Potty” book we had been reading to the boys while they sat on their potties. Nicholas pulled up a foot stool, sat on it, and started to read. This was one of those times I really wanted to laugh but needed to keep a straight face because he was so earnest in his encouragement and was copying everything Joel and I have done so far in getting them to use the toilet. I waited for him to finish reading the book to me before I said “I did it. I did it. I pooped.” From out in the hallway, Dexter came runny shouting “Mommy get two cookies. Mommy get two cookies.” Nicholas beamed at me and said “Good Job, Mommy!” I let them see my poop. They oohed and awed over it. When the boys use the toilet, they get to flush the toilet so Dexter shouted “Mommy flush the toilet.” They were quite proud of me, my boys.
Maybe if I keep trying and letting them be a part of it, it will encourage the same results in them. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
