Dexter embraces religion
We have a few books that I have a little trouble reading the boys, because I’m not entirely prepared to answer any questions that may arise, and it’s one topic on which Katie and I aren’t entirely in agreement. One of those books is “Touch and Feel Creation.” One of my chief complaints is that the illustrations don’t match the text. There’s a page talking about birds, and 30 bloody bird pictures, not one of which is mentioned in the text. And just as a quiz, do you think the three birds mentioned in the text, the robin, the crow, and the swan, actually were present in the picture? Nope. So as we read through the book, Dexter keeps asking, “where’s the Robin?” And I keep answering, “there isn’t one on this page. I know the book talks about robins, but there isn’t a picture of one.”
So bearing that in mind, we get to the end of the book where God gets a bit of play. And Dexter asks a question he hasn’t asked before, “Where’s God?” At this point I was very happy that Katie was sitting next to us, and I turned to her for the answer. She started explaining, “You can’t see God, Dexter. He’s all around us. And he’s inside of you. You can feel him inside of you.” Dexter seemed suddenly to understand, and eager to share he answered, “God is in my belly. I ate him all up!”
Dexter may have missed the point, or he may be on the verge of starting a new religion. We’re not entirely certain. I love my little smart-alleck.
